Bieber is giving Yeezy a run for his money in this latest interview.
"Justin Bieber, he's a bit of a d*ck, right?"
You could be forgiven for thinking this after the Canadian popstar's exploits over the last few years. Let's remind ourselves:
1) There was the time he was filmed p*ssing in a bucket at a restaurant
2) The time he allegedly spat on fans from a hotel balcony
3) That time he left a monkey in Germany
4) The time his deposition video leaked and he came across as a real asshole
5) And the arrest for DUI and drag racing in Miami (not the RuPaul kind, unfortunately).
There wasn't much love or respect for the Biebs after all that, even though some things of the things written were not true or severely overblown. In attempt to turn the tidal wave of hate against him, he has embarked on a very long and public apology campaign this year. He appeared on Ellen for a couple of reflective interviews, and then there was a Comedy Roast, where everyone from Martha Stewart to Ron Burgundy tore him a new one. Humility, indeed.
Thing is, we LOVE the new tracks that Bieber has put out this year (not a day goes by in the Popbuzz office where we don't blast "What Do You Mean?") but the whole 'please forgive me' campaign has felt, at times, a little forced. We weren't sure we believed him. That was until this interview he did with Complex.
You've probably already read the headlines about Bieber comparing himself to Jesus, or the Church to Taco Bell (and, yes, they are a bit bizarre). But beneath that, he was actually talking a lot of sense. He's sounds like he's gained a lot of perspective on things. To be frank, he sounds less like a d*ck and more like someone you could actually chill with. You couldn't say that before.
I went through a point of doing it for myself and doing everything in the industry for myself, and I was unhappy because being able to do stuff for others is the biggest gift of all. I was robbing myself by not enjoying the moments where I should've been enjoying them and doing stuff for other people.Justin Bieber
I wouldn't take back anything. I wouldn’t do anything over again. I would do it all the same way. I'm not going to say I'm sorry for the things that I've done because I think that it allows me to tell a story."
When you get famous, you get people that will encourage whatever you do. When you're young especially, you don't know who's bullshitting you...You don't understand - that's a normal thing for human beings, but I never had that in my life. I didn't even have that with my parents.
Love is a choice. Love is not a feeling. People have made it seem in movies that it’s this fairy tale. That's not what love is. You're not gonna want to love your girl sometimes but you're gonna choose to love her. That's something in life that I had to figure out.
Some people are bad communicators. They find something that works so well for them and they wanna share it, but they don't know how to share it so they're kind of pushy.
Imagine, you hear that f*cking Ozzy Osbourne pisses backstage. Immediately, "Oh, he's a freaking rock star!" As soon as I do it, "He's being a brat."
It's these little bits of insight that make us think Bieber has finally grown up, rather than apologising for the sake of it. Good for him. Although we're still not sure why he has a pet monkey. Whatever. Glad to have you in the real world again, Justin.
