It's been three years since Selena's last album, what do we know so far about the next one?

Even though it’s been three years since Selena Gomez’s last album, it’s looking unlikely that we’ll be hearing it particularly soon.

The singer is still being particularly coy about discussing details of the album, and speaking to POPSUGAR while promoting Hotel Transylvania 3, she said that she was waiting for the “right moment” to drop it. She does however reportedly have at least an entire album of content prepared for it and has been working on the record for two and a half years, so it’s only a matter of time.

But for those fans who just can’t wait for the answers, here’s everything we do know so far:

1) When will the album be out?

On this, Selena is not giving any clues whatsoever. She’s been dropping new singles since early last year, but 14 months later, the album doesn’t seem any closer to a release date. However, she has said that she has enough music for the album.

Selena has a couple of other projects in the works: the imminent release of 13 Reasons Why season two (on which she is the executive producer) and a highly controversial role in Woody Allen's A Rainy Day in New York. It is unclear if the latter project will ever see the light of day anymore, but it would make sense that Selena would want those projects to be out of the way before focussing on album promo. Our guess? Late 2018 or even early 2019.

2) What has she said about it previously?

For the most part, Selena has been pretty tight-lipped about her new album. On Instagram in December, she posted a mysterious photo of herself in the studio with the caption “Currently. Until the next year. Here’s where I’ll be."

However, speaking to POPSUGAR recently, she elaborated further, saying “I don’t know when the right moment is. And I really mean that, not in a way that I’m trying to be mysterious or cool”. She added, “it’s hard to have a voice and make sure that your content means something”. Elaborating on just how much content she has, she said “I’ve been in the studio for a year. So I can technically say I have an album, but I don’t know where I want to go with it because of how different everything sounds”.

3) How many albums does she have so far?

Selena Gomez has two solo albums, Stars Dance in 2013, and Revival in 2015. As part of her band Selena Gomez & the Scene, she also released three albums, Kiss & Tell (2009), A Year Without Rain (2010) and When the Sun Goes Down (2011). That’s five albums in nine years - not bad!

4) What was her last release?

Selena’s last album, Revival, was released in 2015. It debuted at number one on the Billboard top 200 and was positively reviewed, with people praising her new “serious” direction.

5) What will it sound like?

While Selena has traditionally been a straightforward pop artist, her recent work with EDM producer Marshmello and the new, experimental sound of her single “Fetish” leads some to think that she might be venturing into new territory. “Fetish” also featured Gucci Mane, so she could be leaning into a more experimental, rap-based sound – which would be exciting for an ex-Disney starlet. She did also say to POPSUGAR that all of her songs sound “different” and will be “singles” because every one is so individual.

6) Why is it taking so long?

As well as having to wait for the “right moment”, it’s a fact that Selena Gomez is just really, really busy. Since her last album, she’s served as executive producer on Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why, appeared in films including Neighbours 2: Sorority Rising, Hotel Transylvania 3 and A Rainy Day in New York, and worked on new music with other artists and producers. Additionally, she broke up with The Weeknd in October, and withdrew from the public eye following a kidney transplant (due to her lupus) in September. So she’s been pretty busy (and otherwise preoccupied). Be patient!
