Before every Youtuber and her dog moved to Brighton, the British city used to be known for it’s brimming music scene. Well nothing has changed and the latest great hope from the city is pop-duo Josh Christopher & Melis Soyaslanová, otherwise know as IYES.
Josh and Melis have had a pretty consistent hit rate so far ("Glow" was one of our favourite songs last year). "Lessons" is the first single from their new Part Two EP. With lyrics like "Woke up tired this morning, went to work it was boring, time disappeared from my wrist…" it’s very much a 'I can relate to that' kinda song. The song itself is far from boring. It’s a synth pop delight and insanely catchy. WW
Our fav, Tinashe, is making lots of moves lately. She is in the mood to release new music but, in the midst of that, her adoring public have been gifted with this awesome Bleachers X Tinashe collaboration. It may not be the material we're used to, but it's the stuff of dreams. Her voice drifts expertly and confidently against the 80s inflected vibe that is a Bleachers production.
We all know Tinashe lives for the 80s (leather joggers and crop tops, I'm looking at you!) so this collaboration goes down a treat. This one is a part of Bleachers' Terrible Thrills Vol. 2 compilation album and, boy oh boy, are we glad this exists. NI
Where have AlunaGeorge been hiding lately? Last time we saw either of them was Aluna singing with Disclosure at the Brit Awards in 2013. It’s been too long! Well, they’re back. Kinda. They’ve team up with producer ZHU for this low key house banger.
We don’t know much about ZHU but apparently he’s working on a project with Justin Bieber producer Skrillex and one-time Yeezy DJ, A-Trak, so expect to hear more from him in the future. In the meantime, let’s get reacquainted with Aluna’s voice. God damn we’ve missed these two! WW
We love Childish Gambino. We also love a strong female vocal. Any marriage of the two is only bound to be a good thing. New York native, Kelsey Byrne (VÉRITÉ), offers up a charged up cover of one of Gambino's best song. She fully goes in on "Sober", knocking it out of the park with a combination of confidence and a creative and dynamic backdrop.
We're serious. VÉRITÉ isn't afraid to own this song--and own it she does. Give it one spin and you'll probably end up giving it 100 more. Just a fair warning. NI
You don’t need to go further than 10 seconds into "Burnitup!" to realise that this is a B.A.N.G.E.R. Missy Elliot swoops in on the first line with, "I’m gonna shut that down. Kitty kat meow meow meow meow meow|. Ummm you okay, hun? It’s as amazing as it is bizarre. Seriously though, it’s a great track. The beat goes in hard, Janet sings like she’s about 18 again, everyone pulls out their A game.
We were already excited for her new album Unbreakable (her first in 7 years) after we heard her mighty slow jam “No Sleep”, but after “Burnitup!” we don’t think we’ll sleep till it drops on Friday. All hail queen Janet. WW
