Listen to "Squeeze Me", the first release from Pharrell's genre-bending trio in four years.
The idea of a live-action Spongebob movie is a little terrifying, but if it's any consolation it seems like the soundtrack is going to be a bit more promising.
After something of a four-year hiatus, N.E.R.D have reunited to produce "Squeeze Me", a new track for The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water. Because of course.
This song is the band's first release since 2010's Nothing; it's a pretty groovy, beachy tune that wouldn't sound out of place on somebody's playlist down in Bikini Bottom. Give it a listen:
In their four-year break, Pharrell has been notably solidifying his career as a solo recording artist, while Chad Hugo has been working with his DJ Team Missile Command and producing for artists such as Odd Future. Shay Haley joined Pharrell onstage at the iTunes Festival in September, where the pair played a couple of N.E.R.D songs and hinted at a new upcoming project.
N.E.R.D, blending between rock, funk and hip-hop, has always been a project that allows each of the trio to experiment and not take themselves too seriously. So this track, and the context of its release, is definitely a fitting welcome back for the band.
The Spongebob Movie comes out late January. Here's the trailer if you missed it, or denied its existence up until now.
