One member of the cast has given an intriguing clue about a gender identity storyline in the new season of 13 Reasons Why.

Netflix is gearing up for the much-anticipated return of 13 Reasons Why but details about the storyline are still a closely guarded secret.

There has been a lot speculation about what the focus of the second season will be. The creators of the show previously suggested that the fall out from Hannah Baker's suicide and her parents' discovery of the tapes will be a major focus, while the final episode of the first season seemed to suggest that Tyler was planning a school shooting.

In fact, some people have suggested that Netflix delayed the new season to avoid any bad press following the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in February, in which 17 students died, leading to mass protests across America.

13 Reasons Why's Katherine Langford Just Dropped A Huge Hint About Season Two

In a recent interview with E!, Kate Walsh, who plays Hannah Baker's mother, threw a spanner in the works by hinting that a gender identity storyline will also be introduced.

When Kate was asked how the show will top last season, Kate said: "We go off the book this year and it continues the Bryce Walker storyline. It deals with sexual assault and culpability, responsibility and truth, relationships. I think this season the storyline is fantastic and reflecting what's happening in the culture at large, just like with bullying, sexual assault, gender identity and everything in relationships."

She continued: "I think it's a much more redemptive and hope-filled season too. You see my character developing relationships with different kids, trying to find out the truth, trying to assign responsibility for what happened to Hannah. You see how her death has affected the school, the kids and the community at large and all these different secrets and lies that come forth too."

Unfortunately, Kate doesn't go into anymore detail about the gender identity storyline and who it could be about. We're pretty sure gender identity wasn't really discussed at any point during the first season which begs the question: is this storyline going to affect one of the returning characters or will it be a new character? Guess we'll find out very soon.
