The sight of a human sponge during the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade has freaked out a lot of viewers.

As the USA celebrated Thanksgiving yesterday (November 23rd), families across the nation sat down to watch the annual TV spectacular known as the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, beamed live into living rooms direct from the streets of New York City.

Typically, the event features all manner of inflatable cartoon characters, branded floats and an appearance by actual Santa Claus, alongside some performances from popstars with something to plug and the casts of all the latest big Broadway musicals.

One of the 2017 performances came from the cast of the brand new SpongeBob SquarePants musical that recently opened on the great white way, featuring new music written by the likes of Panic! At The Disco, Aerosmith and the late David Bowie.

However, any viewers expecting the familiar yellow sponge to show up were in a for a surprise because this musical looks distinctly more human than the Nickelodeon show we know and love:

Still, this sponge certainly has some pipes on him...even if he isn't, ya know...yellow. Or a sponge.

Judging by the reaction to the performance online, people either LOVE the new look of this show or are completely bemused by every aspect of it.

Here are just a few of the reactions we've spotted online so far:

The sponge has split opinion, but what do you guys think?

Are you enjoying the sound of the SpongeBob musical or is it just freaking you out?
