Clever fans have found a connection between the 2015 prequel and the latest installment in the franchise.

As Star Wars fans around the world celebrate the release of the latest installment in the epic space franchise, some eagle-eyed viewers have spotted a key easter egg in the previous movie Rogue One that pays off beautifully in The Last Jedi.

SPOILER ALERT - WHY WOULD YOU READ THIS ARTICLE WITHOUT SEEING THE MOVIE ANYWAY?

One of the more shocking moments comes early in the film as the rebels' ship is destroyed, killing several characters and injuring Leia, after the first order manage to track them through hyperspace, something we have never seen them be able to do before.

But Twitter user @kyleauxren realised that we actually already knew all about this, thanks to a throwaway line of dialogue from Felicity Jones's Jyn in the 2016 film.

Damn.

It's a nice bit of foreshadowing and a clever way of making a particularly big moment, which hangs over the rest of The Last Jedi, an established part of the official canon.

Maybe there are some other references packed into the standalone flick? We'll need to rewatch and get back to you!

Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi is in cinemas now.
