Will there be a second series of The End of the F***ing World? We take a look at the evidence...

Obsessed with The End of the F***ing World? Same. The question on everybody's lips after watching that cliffhanger ending is whether the show will be returning for a second season. Well, the short answer is that nothing has been confirmed and no details shared just yet. That doesn't stop us though from making some educated guesses about what will happen if a second season is confirmed. We'll continue to update this article as and when we get information.

Will there be a second series of The End of the F***ing World?

Alex Lawther, who plays the lead role of James, was asked about the possibility of a second series recently and this is what he had to say. "Well, we don't know. It was based on a comic book series by Charles Forsman and the comic ends where our episode ends. If there was a series two, it would give Charlie Covell - who wrote and adapted it - a chance to explore something completely from her imagination, which I would be very excited about because I think she's brilliant. So we'll see, basically.

If Alex is keen for a second season, we would hope the rest of the show's creators would be interested in a second season too.

As you'll know if you finished the first season (and if you haven't, why the hell are you reading the article? Spoilers coming up...), the final episode finishes on a pretty big cliffhanger. James and Alyssa – played by Alex and Jessica Barden - are tracked down by the police. Alyssa is caught while James runs away on the beach and it ends on the sound of a gun shot and the screen turning blank. The show could leave it there, like in the comics, but there is clearly so much that could be explored in a second season. Given the success of the show and the buzz that surrounds it, you can bet Netflix will be eager for a second season too. File the second season of The End of... under 'highly likely'.

Has The End of the F***ing World season 2 been confirmed?

Neither Channel 4 nor Netflix have confirmed whether the show has been renewed or not. Netflix usually wait a few weeks before confirming if a show has been renewed, so if we're using that way as a way of predicting renewal announcements then it's likely that you'll hear in February or March whether the show is coming back. But, as we said, we think it's more a case of 'when', not 'if', at this point.

What cast members will return for the second season?

We should really rename this question 'is James dead?' because that's what we really want to know. Seeing Alyssa come to terms with James' death could be a weighty direction for the second season but it would also be the wrong one. The reason so many people are falling in love with the show is because of the dynamic between James and Alyssa. There's something contradictorily wholesome about the connection between these two violence-prone outsiders that we honestly can't bear to see them apart. The tl;dr is that we don't know but our hearts are telling us both Alex Lawther and Jessica Barden will return. At least we know that Alex is eager to return.

We will, of course, be praying to the TV gods for the return of Wunmi Mosaku and Gemma Whelan as our favourite lesbian TV detectives, DC Teri Donoghue & DC Eunice Noon, too.

When will The End of the F***ing World season 2 be released?

The original airing of The End of the F***ing World was on Channel 4 in the UK back in October, so there is a distinct possibility that the writers have already begun on a second season. That said, the first season was based on a comic, so it might be a longer process to write a second season if they are working from scratch. Basically, don't expect anything before October 2018 but we suspect it could be more like early 2019 instead.

Have they started filming The End of the F***ing World season 2?

No. If the show has been renewed then they will be in the writing phase of the project right now. Filming would likely start in the spring/summer.

Is there a trailer The End of the F***ing World season 2 yet?

Nope. Sorry m8.
