The newly solo star honours his former band members in his first public appearance since quitting.
Not exactly known for his speeches, Zayn Malik was always considered the "quiet one" of One Direction. So to see that his first public appearance since quitting the band involves standing alone onstage at this year's Asian Awards, delivering a speech of thanks, is actually super important.
Zayn picked up the Outstanding Achievement in Music Award at this weekend's event, after a video presentation detailed his successes as a part of 1D. Producer and friend Naughty Boy introduced the star, calling him "a friend, a brother and probably the most exciting Asian star that [he's] met". The singer had heartfelt and humbled words of thanks for God, his family and the people in the room, but he was sure not to leave his former band members out.
"I’d also like to take this moment to thank four of the best guys I’ve ever met, whilst being in the band and all of the amazing things that I did," Zayn said in tribute to the 1D boys. "Some of the things we did will stay with me for the rest of my life, and I thank you for that." D'awww.
