Instagram pictures are usually free. Usually.
They're free unless they're being sold by artist Richard Prince for the staggering price of $100,000 per print. It's all wild until you consider one more thing: The photos aren't his and he doesn't ask for permission.
Doe Deere's instagram picture sold for $90,000 and she didn't see a single dollar of that. Imagine having a photo that you took ripped off the internet and sold for 5 figures.
Prince takes a screen grab of the photos, replaces the caption, and puts them on display at at galleries. He gets away with this via fair use laws but people are not happy.
But if you're getting the work of lesser known artists to lazily grab images to copy and display: you're a parasite, Richard Prince.— Colleen Doran (@ColleenDoran) May 22, 2015
why is richard prince allowed on the internet— Arabelle Sicardi (@arabellesicardi) May 22, 2015
People have taken Richard Prince to court but, so far, he has been allowed to continue to sell his controversial works of art.
