Did Annabelle actually escape from the Warrens' Occult museum? No, but the memes about it are still hilarious.

Imagine the scenario: It's 2020, everything is terrible. You're minding your own business at home, alone. You pick up your phone, open that cursed bird app and just when you thought things couldn't get any worse, you see that the real Annabelle doll has escaped from her museum.

Yes, readers. Rumours about Annabelle's escape began circulating last week (August 14) after someone updated her official Wikipedia page to say she'd somehow broken out of the Warren's Occult Museum in Connecticut.

But obviously thankfully, the news was not true.

Shortly after several tweets went viral, the claim was shut down by Tony Spera (the son-in-law of Ed and Lorraine Warren), after he posted a YouTube video showing Annabelle safe and sound, locked in her box.

"I'm here to tell you something. I don't know if you want to hear this or not, but Annabelle did not escape," he explained. "Annabelle's alive. Well, I shouldn't say 'alive'. Annabelle's here, in all her infamous glory. She never left the museum. Remember, I have high-tech security here. If she had left the museum I'd instantly know if something happened or somebody broke in."

Despite the news being debunked, Twitter went into Annabelle meltdown, flooding the social media site with memes about the doll's escapades in the outside world. Here are some of the best reactions...

The year with the killer clowns was honestly better than this.

To be fair, Annabelle's escape would've been an exciting 2020 mid-season plot twist.

At least she's out with friends. I haven't seen mine in five months.

She's definitely gonna have to quarantine after this trip so we've all got about two weeks to run and hide.

Annabelle sweetie, can I pick you anything up from MAC? Some new red lipstick? A brow kit?

..............MEGAN!!!

Annabelle realising her little box was much nicer than anything we have to offer out here:

Ugh, she truly is one of us.

Annabelle will stop the second wave.

We're not laughing *at* you, Annabelle... we're laughing with you.

*laughs nervously*

She is living in our minds rent free.

The real winner of the day, however, was this Annabelle Twitter account who really seized the opportunity and ran with it.

For those not in the know, Annabelle the doll was first brought to the Warrens' attention in 1970, after a student reported that she had been "exhibiting malicious and frightening behaviour".

They then claimed that the doll was "demonically possessed" by the spirit of a deceased girl, and moved it to their museum. Since then, she's remained locked inside a box.

Annabelle was later cemented in horror movie history (albeit with a completely different appearance) with features in The Conjuring franchise, and was later given her own spin-off movie series.
