No doubt you’ve seen a load of posts featuring the caption "bomboclaat" floating around on Twitter – but what does bomboclaat mean?
You're probably already extremely familiar with the viral phrase "Sco pa tu manaa", which has been dominating Twitter for the past few months now. Well, now there's a new word that is currently taking over – "bomboclaat". Just like with sco pa tu manaa, people are using bomboclaat to caption their photos, but not everyone knows what it really means.
According to Techpoint.Africa, the phrase gained traction with Nigerian Twitter over the past month and now it's going worldwide. Apparently, it was first used by a Twitter user in September 2019, who captioned a photo of the 'Winslow’s seen enough' meme from the Nickelodeon's CatDog with the word bomboclaat. Now everyone's using it – and not necessarily in the right way.
What is the meaning of bomboclaat on Twitter?
Bomboclaat (sometimes spelt Bumbaclaat, Bumbclaat and Bumbaclot) is a Jamaican Patois expletive, kind of like saying "fuck". It's hard to directly translate into English, but the phrase is often used as an insult or to express anger, Urban Dictionary reports.
According to Dictionary.com, it's another word for sanitary pads or bathroom wipes and has been recorded since 1956. "Bumbo" literally translates to butt, while "claat" means cloth.
Because people don't know the definition it’s being used incorrectly on Twitter with some believing it means the same as sco pa tu manaa (express your opinion or what does this experience remind you of).
How do you pronounce bomboclaat?
According to YouTube channel The Island Words, bomboclaat is pronounced bom-bo-clah-t.
Needless to say, a lot of people are still confused by the viral phrase – or angry that it's being used incorrectly.
