"One of the scariest moments of my life."
Sadly, we still live in a world where members of the LGBTQ+ community are not granted the same basic human rights as the rest of the world. Some countries have very strict laws regarding LGBTQ+ issues and it fell to transgender YouTuber Gigi Gorgeous to experience the discrimination first hand.
You know Gigi, right? She's a flawless YouTube personality from Canada with over 2.3m subscribers. She underwent a full male-to-female transition and documented the entire thing on camera just a few years ago.
On Tuesday night (Aug. 9) Gigi flew to Dubai but instead of heading straight for the beach, she was detained by authorities as she attempted to enter the country.
Airport police denied her entry into the country because they were told she was transgender. They claimed that her passport still stated that her gender was 'male', even though Gigi has since had it updated to read 'female'. She was then detained and held in the airport for over 5 hours.
AFter being released, Gigi took to Instagram to share her terrifying ordeal with her followers, saying that she was now on her way to "somewhere much more accepting." She also added, "How you can be denied entry somewhere just because of who you are is seriously disgusting and also very scary." According to the original report of the story, 'imitation of women by men' is an illegal act in Dubai and it punishable by time in prison.
If you're a subscriber to Gigi's channel, you'll know her storytelling is second to none. We expect to hear Gigi's side of the story in a sassy video within the next few weeks.
