James Charles slams accusations he lists himself as "female" on Tinder to match with straight men

5 December 2019, 16:10

James has previously spoken about the "disgusting" and "dangerous" implications surrounding claims about his behaviour with straight men.

James Charles has taken to Twitter to set the record straight and call out the people who are accusing him of listing himself as female on his Tinder profile, in order to match with straight men.

This isn't the first time James has had an issue with Tinder. Previously James has revealed that his verified profile kept being banned and deleted. In a tweet, he wrote: "hey @Tinder can you please stop deleting my account that I'm paying for??!! maybe if your customer service that I've emailed 4 times didn't f*cking suck we could've avoided this!!!!!"

Over the past week, several people who have reportedly set their preferences to "female" have posted screenshots of James appearing on their Tinder. The situation also apparently did the rounds on Twitter in May 2019.

Responding to an untagged tweet that said "if you identify as a gay man do not set your tinder settings to female for straight men to find you," James posted a series of points in a thread, slamming the accusations and clearing things up once and for all.

He wrote: "I’m so sick of people talking about this. 1. My identity on dating apps was listed as “androgynous” - someone who expresses themselves in both feminine & masculine ways. NOT a female to “trick” anyone. 2. Everytime someone said they were straight, I unmatched right away."

He went on to say that "having simple conversations with people that swipe right on you on dating apps is NOT predatory." He also clarified that he has been on "many awesome dates with either gay, bisexual or closeted men over the last 6 months" and has "gone on 0 dates with 'straight men'".

He continued: "I deleted dating apps from my phone last week because although I’ve CONSENTUALLY met some great people from them, unfortunately I receive a lot of harassment from people who only match to take screenshots or make videos & a spectacle of me, thanks to people like you who will not let these FALSE ACCUSATIONS die down."

Continuing his thread, James wrote: "I’m single and looking for love just like everyone else. I mind my own business and am extremely careful with who I talk to, but people take advantage of me and continue to spread bullshit like this around and it is SO frustrating and makes dating impossible. Leave me ALONE."

When tweeted by a user who said "not everything needs a reaction.. just let it go," James replied: "No Maggie, it’s been 7 months and people clearly have NOT let it go so I have a right to stand up for myself when I’m being labeled as a predator"

James has opened up in the past about the "disgusting" connotations involved when Tati Westbrook called out James's behaviour, "manipulation" and sexual comments around straight men in her 'BYE SISTER...' video. The situation quickly spiralled when people began posting screenshots and making videos, accusing James of "tricking" and "harassing" straight men.

In a recent interview with Paper magazine, James called out those claims in Tati's video: "What that statement implies is that gay men are all predatory, which is disgusting, not true, and very dangerous to put out there."

He also opened up about how the whole thing affected, and is continuing to affect, his mental health. "I’m not mentally in a place where I want to be," he said. "What’s even harder to swallow is that it’s been six months since all the drama happened. I thought by this time I’d be completely good — back to normal, if you will — and that’s not the case."
