Can you tell me why every time I step outside I see my people die?/ All we want to do is take the chains off./ All we want to do is be free.

J. Cole sung his emotional tribute to Michael Brown, "Be Free", on David Letterman Wednesday evening. J. Cole originally released the song in August, just after Brown's murder but reprised it on the Late Show stage this week.

He chose not to perform one of the tracks from his recently released 2014 Forest Hills Drive, but rather the protest song, which clearly struck a chord with host, Letterman. At the end of the emotional song, Letterman can be heard remarking, "Oh my God. Oh my God. You know what I mean? Fantastic. Oh boy."
