Let's face it. Dinner and drinks doesn't always cut it.

Anyone who has ever seen a romantic comedy will know that "dinner and drinks" is the go-to first date idea that always leads to a "perfect match". Unfortunately, not all of us have the ability to endure these traditional dates without things getting a little awkward from time to time.

If you're brainstorming date plans, but don't want to get caught in an awkward moment, here are a few unconventional date ideas that are guaranteed to be a good time.

1) Flea Market.

If you live in a city that has a local flea market, why not meet up on the weekend and get to know one another among a pile of other people's belongings. It's cheap, fun, and super low key.

2) Bowling.

Bowling is competitive but super relaxed. You can have a fast game where all you do is bowl, or a slow game where you chat between turns. If things take an awkward turn, you can just get back to the game at hand.

3) The pier/carnival/theme park

You get to ride rides, eat trash, and act like a kid. Guaranteed to put you and your date in a good mood.

4) Food festival.

Research a nearby food festival where you and your date can walk around and try different types of food and drinks. Food is a conversation driver that can lead to different topics like travel, upbringing, hobbies etc.

5) Video game/arcade date.

Head to an arcade with a pocket full of coins and see what you guys can win. Things might get competitive but it's a light-hearted setting and conversation should flow easily.

6) 30 minute ice cream date.

Lots of people choose coffee dates because they're short and casual. You know what's even shorter and more casual than coffee? Ice cream. It's a short amount of time but perfect if you can't commit to a whole evening. Besides, it's always better to leave them wanting more.

7) Bike date.

You don't have to do too much talking. It can be as leisurely or as intense as you want. Aaaand, you can definitely cut the date short if you're not impressed.

8) Pub quiz/trivia night

Team up to show off your general knowledge. You'll come off looking amazing after displaying your expertise. You can work as a team and build a fast bond. If your team wins, then that's a bonus.

9) Gym class heroes.

If you don't mind getting a little sweaty, try being work out buddies before diving too deeply into the romance thing. Take a class together at your gym (kickboxing classes are all over the place and are a perfect partner sport). Similarly, hikes are a fun endorphin releasing activity.

10) Pizza in the park.

Remember when you were a kid and a "pizza party" was the best thing that someone could suggest? Take the formality out of a first date by grabbing a pizza and heading to the park. There's no waiting for tables, small talk while the food is prepared, or distracting restaurant vibes. Pizza is universal and the park is a big open space.
