5 Seconds Of Summer fans started a hashtag in support of Ashton Irwin after he received messages urging him to commit self-harm because of their upcoming tour with The Chainsmokers.

5 Seconds Of Summer fans have started a hashtag in support of Ashton Irwin after he received hateful Instagram comments because of the announcement of their tour with The Chainsmokers.

Following their joint single ‘Who Do You Love’ which was released last Friday (Feb 7), 5SOS announced they will be supporting the EDM giants on tour in the US but the news didn’t receive the best reaction from some 5SOS fans.

Instead of expressing their disappointment the usual way (you know, not buying a ticket to the show), some people decided to send nasty comments directly to drummer Ashton. According to Alt Press, several of the comments urged him to commit self-harm, something which Ashton has struggled with in the past.

It is not immediately clear why Ashton has been singled out from the band. A lot of the backlash to The Chainsmokers centres around problematic comments the band have made in interviews, while some see it as a cynical move by The Chainsmokers to sell more tickets to their US tour.

Ashton posted a new photo on Instagram seemingly in response to the backlash with the comment: “The past doesn’t kill me anymore”

Concerned fans with started the #WeStandWithAshtonIrwin to show their support.

A fan reached out to Ashton’s sister Lauren Dawkin on Instagram to check how Ashton was doing, to which she commented back: “He’s perfectly fine. The hate doesn’t get to him, he’s much stronger than you think”.

Neither 5SOS or The Chainsmokers have commented on the backlash.
