Ariana Grande fans think her new song 'Imagine' is a tribute to Mac Miller

Ariana teased the meaning behind 'Imagine' on Twitter last night and since then fans have linked it to Mac...
It's been Ariana Grande season all year long and we wouldn't have it any other way. In 2018 our fave has not only released a critically acclaimed Number 1 album (Sweetener is everything we dreamed of and more) but four hit singles ('no tears left to cry', 'God is a woman', 'breathin' and 'thank u, next' all slap) and she isn't done yet. Ariana is releasing a new song called 'Imagine' this Friday.
QUIZ: Are you love, patience or pain in 'thank u, next'?
'Imagine' will be the second taste of Ariana's highly anticipated, surprise fifth studio album thank u, next and if it's anywhere near as good as the title track, we are in for a treat. Ariana previously teased 'Imagine' in her 'breathin' video and on Twitter. She's been pretty tight-lipped about the meaning of the song but last night she opened up about it and now fans think it's about Mac Miller.
Is 'Imagine' about Mac Miller?
Taking to Instagram stories just after announcing the release of the song, Ariana wrote: "a lot of this album mourns failed yet, important, beautiful relationships in my life (as well as celebrates growth / exploring new independence). but for those of you asking about imagine: i would say if 'thank u, next' = acceptance... 'imagine' = denial. hope that makes sense." This sounds heartbreaking.
When a fan then assumed "so imagine is like a darker version of “thank u, next”. possibly explaining about what’s next after a breakup and how to get through it", Ari replied "kind of like... pretending it never ended. denial. but i look forward to you hearing it and having your own experience with it. you may take away something totally different and specific to your life! love u."
Ariana also revealed to another fan that the album is "terrifyingly" personal.

So we're definitely going ✈️ tears.
It gets more emotional though. Fans have sleuthed and it looks like the song could be about Mac Miller. In November a fan asked Ariana what 'Imagine' is about and she said that it's: "a simple, beautiful love that is now (and forever) unattainable". Considering that Mac died this September, four months after Ari and Mac split, it seems likely that it's a tribute to him.
Not only that but Mac had an arm tattoo of the word "Imagine".
Here are the fan theories.
