Billie Eilish says it "irked" her when people would call her the "face of pop". The 17-year-old singer revealed why she is not a fan of "it girl" labels in a new Vogue Australia interview.
Billie Eilish has been hailed as one of music's bright young stars. Her meteoric rise and ever-growing fanbase are proof-positive that the star's brand of music is resonating with young listeners everywhere. However, when it comes to headlines about her being the "face of pop" you might be surprised to find that the singer is actually annoyed by all the "it girl" labels.
In an interview with Vogue Australia, Billie Eilish talked about the labels that 'irk' her as an artist.
“It’s annoying,” Billie told Vogue.
“As grateful as I am for the appreciation and the love, honestly, I’ve become numb to it. I remember the first couple of times people called me the face of pop or pop's new It girl or whatever the fuck … it kind of irked me. The weird thing about humans is we [think we] have to label everything, but we don’t.”
A cursory Google search of the 17-year-old singer will reveal that quite a lot of fans and publications view her as the new "face of pop" and "it girl" in the genre. However, we can see how getting told that 50 times a day could get a bit old.
Billie Eilish is used to bucking labels and expectations. Earlier this year, in a promotional My Calvins ad campaign, Billie revealed her reason for always wearing baggy clothes.
"I never want the world to know everything about me. I mean, that's why I wear big baggy clothes. Nobody can have an opinion because they haven't see what's underneath. You know?"
"Nobody can be like 'oh, she's slim thick. She's not slim thick. She got a flat ass. She's got a fat ass.' No one can say any of that because they don't know. "
Billie Eilish has continued to break records, perform to sold out crowds, and accomplish a great deal as a young artist. "It girl" labels or not, there's no denying how far she's come in the last 12 months alone.
