"Tweeting about buying an $88,000 purse in the midst of a pandemic where people are skipping meals and terrified that they'll be evicted, is deeply insensitive and unnecessary."

Cardi B has defended herself after she was criticised for considering splurging $88,000 on a designer bag.

On Sunday (Dec 6), Cardi shared that she was thinking of treating herself with her Twitter followers. She tweeted: "Should I spend 88K for this damn purse ? Omggg it’s temptin."

People thought Cardi's tweet was particularly tone-deaf and insensitive because people have been struggling financially during the coronavirus pandemic. Many criticised Cardi's lack of self awareness about the current climate.

Cardi then defended herself from the backlash… but it backfired. First, she shared her previous donations from earlier this year. In April, Cardi donated $1 million for coronavirus relief. She also donated another $1 million to her fans through CashApp and gave 20,000 meal supplements to New York medical staff.

She tweeted: "Also I got 7 uncles an 3 aunts on my daddy side, 9 aunts and 3 uncles on my momma side a whole bunch of cousins I had to help cause of the pandemic. If I want to splurge I can with out y'all asking for hand outs like me and my husband don’t do so. Thank you.

"I already donated 2 million dollars this year and I’m doing something very special in another country that will be done with next year. What have you donated?"

The rapper then started a "challenge" and said she would be matching donations if people share that they had been making charitable contributions.

She continued: "Okay let’s do this challenge! Since ya want to tell me to donate soo much… Drop receipts on what YOU have donated too. I will match it and donate to an organization you have donate as well. LETS START NOW!

"Any charity or foundation drop your receipts under the comment I will match what you donated and match your donation to that same charity or foundation. Lets match energy."

However, that was met with even more criticism with some arguing that people don't even have enough money for themselves and Cardi, a millionaire, was asking her followers for proof of donations.

Cardi has now reluctantly apologised. She said: "Ok guys I apologize. There you happy ?! I don’t see ya askin trump for a apology when he out here missing COVID meetings to play golf but…"

She added: "Definitely buying the bag now."
