We need a lifetime to recover from this...
A Star Is Born is finally here. After months of anticipation, the Bradley Cooper directorial debut is now out in cinemas around the world and it's safe to say that people are already obsessed. Not only is the movie receiving rave reviews from critics and the general public alike for its moving storyline and stunning soundtrack but both Lady Gaga and Bradley are being praised for their performances as Ally and Jackson in it.
The film is an emotional tale of music, fame and addiction and it's the fourth remake of an American classic. The first version of ASIB came out in 1937 (Janet Gaynor, Frederic March), it was then adapted with Judy Garland and James Mason in 1954 and Barbara Streisand and Kris Kristofferson in 1976. The basic plot of the film hasn't changed much but many viewers are only just finding out what happens in it.
In the film Gaga plays Ally, an aspiring singer who has all but given up on her dreams. However, one night Jackson (Bradley), an established rockstar, hears her sing at a Drag bar and her life changes. Not only does Jackson invite Ally to tour with him but the two of them fall in love and Ally becomes a superstar. They later get married and Ally wins the prestigious Best New Artist award at the Grammys.
However, there is a dark undercurrent to the film. Jackson has a serious addiction to alcohol and drugs that controls his life. When Ally wins her Grammy, Jackson stumbles on stage and wets himself. He goes to rehab and sobers up afterwards but, after Ally's manager tells him that he must leave Ally (unbeknownst to Ally) because he is an embarrassment, he commits suicide. It's harrowing.
The film ends with Ally giving her first performance since Jackson's death and it's a stripped back version of a heart-rending ballad called 'I'll Never Love Again'. Everything about it is soul destroying, so it's understandable that even people who knew what would happen to Jackson are struggling to take it all in.
Here are just a few of the reactions.
