As Lorde turns 20 today, we look back on her best lyrics about being a teenager.

Before Lorde came along with Pure Heroine, it felt like nobody had written music specifically for teenagers in a long time. It may have been even longer since a teenager had written those lyrics themselves, rather than some 40 y/o man who has never used the internet before.

Lorde was a breath of fresh of air because she offered a fresh perspective. Through her lyrics, she shares her excitement and fear about the future and her sadness about what she's going to have to leave behind. It goes deep.

Today (7/11), Ella turns 20, leaving her teenager years behind once and for all. It's a big milestone for every teenager, as she acknowledged on her Twitter.

With this in mind, we thought we should revisit some of Lorde's most compelling teenage lyricism.

1) "Team"

We live in cities you'll never see on screen

Not very pretty, but we sure know how to run things

Livin' in ruins of a palace within my dreams

And you know, we're on each other's team

Lorde

2) "Glory & Gore"

No-one 'round here is good at keeping their eyes closed

The sun is starting to light up when we're walking home

Tired little laughs, gold-lie promises, we'll always win at this

Lorde

3) "White Teeth Teens"

I'll let you in on something big

I am not a white teeth teen

I tried to join but never did

The way they are, the way they seem is something else, it's in their blood

Their molars blinking in the lights

In the underpass where we all sit

And do nothing, and enjoy it

Lorde

4) "Tennis Court"

Baby be the class clown, I'll be the beauty queen in tears

It's a new art form showing people how little we care

We're so happy, even when we're smiling out of fear

Let's go down to the tennis court and talk it up like yeah

Lorde

5) "The Love Club"

My mother's love is choking me

I'm sick of words that hang above my head

What about the kid? It's time the kid got free

Lorde

6) "Ribs"

This dream isn't feeling sweet

We're reeling through the midnight street

And I've never felt more alone

It feels so scary, getting old

Lorde

7) "A World Alone"

All my fake friends and all of their noise

Complain about work

They're studying business, I study the floor

Lorde

8) "Still Sane"

I'm not in the swing of things

But what I really mean is

Not in the swing of things yet

Lorde

9) "Buzzcut Season"

The men up on the news

They try to tell us all that we will lose

But it's so easy in this blue

Where everything is good

Lorde

10) "Royals"

I've never seen a diamond in the flesh

I cut my teeth on wedding rings in the movies

And I'm not proud of my address

In the torn up town, no post code envy
