Miley Cyrus made the comments after dissing Liam Hemsworth with Cody Simpson on Instagram live.

Miley Cyrus has addressed the backlash surrounding her "you don't need to be gay" comments in a recent Instagram video.

Miley Cyrus caused controversy over the weekend on Instagram live (20 Oct). The 26-year-old singer posted a video with her new boyfriend Cody Simpson, in which they opened up about their relationship, stanning each other and how they ended up together. However, Miley also dissed her ex-husband Liam Hemsworth during the livestream (she called him a "dick") and in doing so Miley made some pretty bizarre remarks about sexuality, and whether or not people actually have to be gay.

Now, Miley has clarified her comments in a statement, explaining what she really meant and discussing her own sexuality.

In the video, Miley offered fans dating advice and it wasn't well received by the internet. Miley said: "There are good men out there guys, don't give up. You don't have to be gay, there are good people with dicks out there you just gotta find them. You gotta find a dick that's not a dick. I always thought I had to be gay because all guys are evil but it's not true." Um. Okay.

People then called Miley out for the comment on Twitter. One person wrote: "People aren’t queer because they 'gave up' on men. This is so insulting." Another added: "This is not only disappointing but incredibly insulting and damaging to the queer community." Meanwhile, Miley's fans defended her by saying that she was just joking about her own sexuality.

Now Miley has made clear how she really feels. Taking to Twitter, she wrote: "I was talking about sucky guys, but let me be clear, YOU don't CHOOSE your sexuality. You are born as you are. It has always been my priority to protect the LGBTQ community I am a part of. Happy Monday!"

So there we have it. Miley wasn't claiming that queer people can choose to be straight. That being said, it's understandable why people took issue with what she originally said. Words have meaning and whether we're joking or not, it's important to understand the ramifications of what we say.
