Could MCR finally be releasing new music?

Gerard Way has posted a cryptic image to his Instagram account, sending My Chemical Romance fans into a spiral over the possibility of new music.

With everything happening with the US election over the weekend you would be forgiven for missing Gerard's post, which was posted on Sunday afternoon (Nov 8).

The images features what appears to be a white statue of the Virgin Mary, partially obscured by a flash of black with faint lines of golden, fiery light.

Gerard didn't post a caption with the image and there were no tags either. However, because the image is so different to what Gerard has posted on his account before, fans are speculating that it might have something to do with a new project, and they're hoping that project will be MCR related.

One fan wrote in the comments: "idk what this is but it'd make a very nice single cover I think". Another added: "THE TIME HAS COME EVERYBODY STAY CALM THIS IS NOT A DRILL".

"Don't do this, don't give me hope", said another, presumably speaking on behalf of the entire MCR fandom.

Plans for a full My Chemical Romance reunion were postponed following the coronavirus outbreak.

MCR were set to tour across North America, UK and Japan earlier this year but were forced to postpone to 2021.

In an Instagram post from June, they announced the rescheduled dates saying: "As a band, we are deeply aware of the profound problems and crucial issues the world is facing right now. These issues are all life-changing, and we have them in the forefront of our minds on a regular basis. All of our focus should be on making the world better in every way we can. ⁣

We would never want to distract from the challenges we are facing right now, but we feel it is the right thing to let people know that we have rescheduled our shows, so that we can offer people a refund on tickets in these difficult financial times.⁣"

With such a large tour planned, the assumption of many was that MCR would release new music.

This theory gained more support when Gerard Way reportedly registered unreleased songs to BMI Repertoire, a platform on which musicians upload tracks to collect revenue and royalties.

One of those songs was 'Emily', which had been previously released in demo form as part of Living With Ghosts, the band’s 10-year anniversary reissue of The Black Parade, while 'Still Alive’ was completely new.

None of the band have officially commented on the possibility of new music, although guitarist Frank Iero did troll one fan on Twitter who said they were waiting for new music by "the band".

Iero wrote in response: "You’re definitely gonna have to narrow down “the band” for me" (Iero has released music under multiple projects and bands over the years).
