My Chemical Romance have been forced to postpone their upcoming shows in Japan due to the coronavirus outbreak.

In a statement posted to their social media today (March 12), the recently-reformed emo icons wrote that: “The promoter of our Japan shows suggested that we postpone the shows in Japan for the safety of the public, and we are heeding that advice."

"The promoter of our Japan shows suggested that we postpone the shows in Japan for the safety of the public, and we are heeding that advice.  We had very much hoped to have alternate dates confirmed before we announced the postponement, to make sure our fans knew we had every intention of coming back.  Somehow, word got out before we could do that.  However, please know we are working on rescheduling shows and will try to announce those soon. We are terribly sad to postpone, and even more distressed about what is happening the world over.  Take good care and we hope to see you all as soon as possible. Please be good to each other.  My Chemical Romance"

MCR were set to play two shows in Japan, according to their official website, including one show in Tokyo and another in Osaka.

MCR have an extensive world tour planned for 2020, including dates next week in Australia. The band are then due to head to Europe in June and then a North American tour in September and October. At the time of writing, all the other shows are still going ahead.

The cancellation is the latest in a long list of entertainment events around the world that have been cancelled or postponed due to fears surrounding the coronavirus pandemic. Earlier this week Coachella, which as due to kick off in April, announced that they were postponing the Californian festival until October. SXSW in Austin, Texas has been cancelled for the first time in its 34 year history and Miley Cyrus has cancelled her Australian show which she was scheduled to perform at tomorrow.

Back in Japan, there are increasing doubts that the Summer Olympic Games will not go ahead this July/August because of the virus.

Be safe out there, folks!
