Hayley Williams also explained why she needed to release solo music outside of Paramore.
Yesterday (Jan 24), Hayley Williams released her first official single as a solo artist. 'Simmer' is a heartbreakingly candid song about self-love, anger and mercy, and it's the lead track from Hayley's new album Petals for Armor which is due out this May. Hayley wrote the song with Paramore band member Taylor York, and Joey Howard who toured as a bassist for the band.
Paramore fans need not worry though. The group haven't broken up. They are only on hiatus and now Hayley has confirmed that she intends to record another Paramore album with Taylor York and Zac Farro after Petals for Armor comes out.
Discussing Paramore on the radio, Hayley teased: "I do believe when it’s time for us to make the next Paramore record there will be just as transparent lyrics and hopefully really visceral feelings that come across... I wouldn’t have had access to this stuff if we didn’t just pause and get quiet for a minute.” In other words, another Paramore record is definitely coming.
Hayley also spoke in-depth about the hiatus. She said: "I was really excited about the band taking time off. We kind of came to a point where we were like, 'Hey, what's it like to have time off without losing a band member? Let's try it!' You know. We were sort of just ready to experience adult life at home. It's been a really long time since we were just friends."
Hayley added: "I think that what happened for me is this emotional whiplash where I was going through so much before we released After Laughter and, as problems do, they stay and wait for you if you don't figure them out. We came back home and life got a little quieter and so all these things were creeping up in me and I just needed help."
Hayley then explained how Petals for Armor started: "So I started doing more intensive therapy. And, on a suggestion from one of the people that I spoke to, they were like, 'You should just be writing again.' It helps you to see what you're going through'. I have a tendency to really deny things that I'm feeling and writing helps me, so it just happened."
She continued: "I remember everyone was sort of just like 'What's the problem? You make music, just do it and we'll support you. Doesn't really matter if it's nothing and it doesn't really matter if it's everything. Just do it and see where it goes". And now it's real. I'm still shocked by it but I'm so so proud."
Petals for Armor will be released worldwide May 8th 2020 and 'Simmer' is out now.
