Since 2017, Selena Gomez underwent a kidney transplant and ended relationships with Justin Bieber and The Weeknd.

Selena Gomez has opened up about her personal life and how she felt "worthless" before releasing 'Lose You to Love Me'.

Selena Gomez is back. After four years away from the limelight, the 27-year-old popstar has returned and scored her first US number 1 single. Last month (Oct 23), Selena released her highly anticipated comeback single 'Lose You to Love Me', along with 'Look at Her Now' as a surprise gift for fans. Both singles document Selena's experience with a break-up and finding strength and happiness on the other side. They mark the start of an exciting new era for Selena, her first since Revival.

Speaking to Syke on Air about why she took a lot of time off, Selena said: "Everything that happened within two years was a shitshow. I was completely thrown all over the place. Work-wise I didn't know what I was gonna do but then personally stuff happened. I think that when I finally realised that I was ready to come back was when everything was released and when everything was gone and I finally felt like I had made it through one of the worst chapters of her life."

Selena continued: "It takes time for you to even realise that you lost your self. The girl that I was before I entered any sort of relationship is the girl that I want to be but now I finally feel like I've got her, just a little bit more weathered, a little bit more experienced."

She added: "I had people fall in love with who I was and then slowly but surely tear that down until I was nothing. I felt worthless. I felt thrown to the side. It was horrible. It was the most disgusting feeling."

Fans of Selena will already know that she experienced a lot in the past two years. In September 2017, she announced that she underwent a life-saving kidney transplant and in October 2017, she broke up with The Weeknd after eight months of dating. Selena then rekindled her eight-year, on-and-off-again relationship with Justin Bieber before they officially split in March 2018. Three months later, Justin got engaged to Hailey Baldwin and now they're married.

Selena hasn't spoken about Justin directly but many fans have speculated that 'Lose You to Love Me' is inspired by her relationship with Justin. Lyrics such as "In two months, you replaced us / Like it was easy" appear to directly reference Justin moving on and marrying Hailey almost immediately after he broke up with Selena in 2018.

In a recent 103.5 KTU interview about 'Lose You to Love Me', Selena said: "It's only right for me to speak on what I speak. I didn't say anything for two years. I sat back. I watched. I cried. It was awful but having a moment to myself and also letting people have their moment and enjoy life and love it is also really important but this was my turn and I deserved a right to share what I felt."

She then added: "I don't need a reaction, actually, in fact, I don't want it, I just want my truth to sit as it is. I want this to be my moment and I feel I deserve it. I'm not saying I've got it all figured out but just for now, yes, it feels so dam good to be done."
