Does Liam Payne's 'Stack It Up' copy Selena Gomez's 'Same Old Love' or not?

Liam Payne is back with a banger but fans are calling 'Stack It Up' a "rip-off" of Selena Gomez's 'Same Old Love'.

Last week (Sep 18), Liam Payne made headlines for numerous reasons. First things first, the One Direction star posed naked for Mert Alas and the thirst tweets were out of control, then Liam got candid about the fact that he and his former bandmate Louis Tomlinson "hated" each other in the early years of the group and, last but not least, he released his first new single in almost a year: 'Stack It Up (feat. A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie)'.

In short, it was an amazing week for Liam Payne. However, he is now facing accusations that 'Stack It Up' copies Selena Gomez's hit 'Same Old Love'.

'Stack It Up' was co-written for Liam by Ed Sheeran and produced by renowned hitmaker Steve Mac. This isn't the first time that Ed was worked with Liam either. The superstar also wrote 'Strip That Down' for Liam, along with multiple songs for One Direction, including their UK Number 1 single 'Little Things'. Meanwhile, Steve's worked on some of the biggest hits of the last few years including 'Shape of You' and 'Rockabye'.

The song received praise for its relatable lyrics and infectious chorus but Selena Gomez fans quickly began pointing out that the production and melody are reminiscent of her 2015 hit 'Same Old Love'.

One fan tweeted: "honestly the new Liam Payne song just sounds like a rip off of Selena Gomez song" to "so liam basically stole selena’s beat."

If you listen to both songs together, it's easy to hear the similarities.

Liam isn't the only artist to be accused of stealing from another song this year. In 2019 alone, 5 Seconds of Summer, Taylor Swift, Jonas Brothers, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga have all been called out for potentially plagiarising other songs. Most of the time, these similarities happen to be mere coincidence but every now and then they result in a singer being sued.

As it stands, Selena and Liam are yet to respond to the 'Stack It Up' controversy. We shall update you if they do.

Do you think 'Stack It Up' and 'Same Old Love' sound alike?
