Shawn opened up about loving weed in a Rolling Stone interview...

Shawn Mendes is thriving right now. In just five years he's gone from being a popular Vine star to one of the most successful musicians on the planet. This year alone he has scaled charts with his Number 1 self-titled third album and dominated radio with hit singles including the likes of 'In My Blood' and 'Lost In Japan'. Not to mention, he's also won major awards at the AMAs and the BBMAs.

This week Rolling Stone published a profile with our fave and it's incredibly revealing. In it Shawn opens up about everything from his experiences with anxiety to people trying to out him: “I thought, ‘You fucking guys are so lucky I’m not actually gay and terrified of coming out. That’s something that kills people." However, it's his comments about weed that fans are now divided over.

In the piece, Shawn revealed that he smokes weed. He said: “I love weed. I wouldn’t tweet that — not yet, at least — but it’s really good for me. When I’m home, I’ll smoke and then play guitar for seven hours.” The Canadian king then went on to say that he wants to try shrooms "so badly" and added: "I think it would help me a lot”, all of which is normal for a young man.

However, the news that Shawn smokes weed has worried some of his fans in the most endearing way. It's no secret that the 20-year-old popstar has legions of young followers and some of them are concerned by the fact that he loves weed. A stan account called Shawn Mendes Updates shared the news and people immediately began expressing shock and disbelief.

Check out the earnest complaints here.

Our hearts. It's worth noting that weed is now legal in Canada and many places around the world so Shawn isn't committing any crimes. Plus studies have indicated that weed can have medicinal properties and helps with illnesses like anxiety so we have no doubt that it's "good for [him]", like Shawn says. We're pretty certain that fans have nothing to worry about.

Unsurprisingly, as soon as the backlash started to spread online, people began to defend Shawn. Some were keen to assert that there is nothing wrong with Shawn saying that he loves weed. Others wanted fans to focus on the more pressing matters in the interview. Shawn being candid about things like panic attacks is so important.

Here are just a few of the defences.

In reality, it's great to see a pop star of Shawn's stature be so open about the fact that he smokes weed. So many people do and his honesty will no doubt help bust some of the myths surrounding it. On top of that, it's brilliant to hear him be candid about his mental health and everything he's experiencing right now.

We do not deserve him.
