A theory that Taylor Swift's 'Vigilante Shit' lyrics are about Kanye West and Kim Kardashian is currently going viral on TikTok.
Last week (Oct 21), Taylor Swift released her highly anticipated 10th studio album Midnights. The project instantly received widespread acclaim from fans and critics alike. It's already broken streaming and vinyl records and sold over one million copies in the US alone. Midnights is currently projected to have the highest first-week sales of Taylor's entire career.
In the days since Midnights came out, people have been obsessing over the lyrics of each track and the meanings behind them. One song receiving a lot of attention is 'Vigilante Shit'. Fans think it's about Kanye West or Scooter Braun.
What are Taylor Swift's 'Vigilante Shit' lyrics about?
In 'Vigilante Shit', Taylor sings about getting revenge on an enemy. The chorus goes: "I don't start shit, but I can tell you how it ends / Don't get sad, get even / So on the weekends / I don't dress for friends / Lately, I've been dressin' for revenge". It simply could be about getting revenge on an ex but there appear to be multiple references to Kanye and Scooter.
In the second verse, Taylor gets more specific. She sings: "She needed cold, hard proof, so I gave her some / She had the envelope, where you think she got it from? / Now she gets the house, gets the kids, gets the pride / Picture me thick as thieves with your ex-wife / And she looks so pretty / Drivin' in your Benz / Lately, she's been dressin' for revenge."
Given that Kanye and Kim have recently had a very public divorce, followed by news that Kanye cheated on Kim, it's very possible that the lyrics apply to them. Kim has also spoken at large about how she now dresses for herself not Kanye.
Meanwhile, it's well known that Taylor had a very public fallout with Kanye and Kim, so many people on TikTok are now convinced the song is directed at Kanye specifically and multiple videos of the theory are going viral on the platform.
However, there is also reason to believe that the verse could be about Scooter Braun who Taylor recently clashed with after he purchased her masters. Like Kanye, Scooter has recently had a divorce. His ex-wife Yael Cohen left him in 2021, citing “irreconcilable differences". There were also rumours that he'd cheated on her with Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Erika Jayne but Erika has denied them.
In the third verse, Taylor sings: "While he was doin' lines and crossin' all of mine / Someone told his white-collar crimes to the FBI". This appears to be a direct reference to Scooter given that he was recently sued for $200 million over a failed private equity fund.
