Matty Healy also said: "if you're gay we love you, and God fucking loves you".
Matty Healy defied anti-LGBTQ+ laws in Dubai by kissing one of his male fans at a recent tour date in the city.
It's no secret that The 1975 are vocal LGBTQ+ allies. As soon as the band first rose to fame with their self-titled debut album in 2013, Matty Healy, Adam Hann, Ross MacDonald and George Daniel have used their platform as stars to raise awareness about LGBTQ+ issues and encourage equality. Matty also donated a huge £16,000 to help set up an LGBTQ+ Community Centre in London in 2018.
Now Matty has made a statement about gay rights at a concert in Dubai.
Due to Dubai's strict anti-LGBTQ+ laws, popstars are encouraged to not in anyway endorse LGBTQ+ rights at their concerts there. Last night (Aug 14), Matty ignored this at The 1975's first gig in Dubai. He not only proclaimed: "If you're gay we love you, and God fucking loves you" in front of an LGBTQ+ flag but he also stepped off the stage and kissed one of his male fans on the lips during the show.
Unsurprisingly, multiple fans filmed videos of the kiss and took to Twitter to praise Matty. In one of the videos, Matty can be heard asking his fan: "Do you want me to kiss you?" before kissing him. Matty joins the likes of stars such as Little Mix who've gone against Dubai's anti-LGBTQ+ laws to support their queer fans.
Following the concert, Matty tweeted about what happened. He wrote: "Thank you Dubai you were so amazing. I don’t think we’ll be allowed back due to my ‘behaviour’ but know that I love you and I wouldn’t have done anything differently given the chance again".
He then added: "But who knows maybe they will let me back in let’s just wait and see".
