Troye has disproved the idea that teenage girls don't like gay male pop stars.

Prince of melancholic bops, Troye Sivan, has a unique relationship with his fans, as you probably know.

Like many YouTubers of his generation, Troye grew up on camera speaking directly to his fans week in, week out, which has obviously created a very close bond between himself and his fans. That's a unique enough experience as it is.

Perhaps what is more interesting is his status as a pin-up to young girls and an openly gay singer, two things previously thought to be contradictory. In the past (and to some extent this still happens today) LGBTQ artists or actors were pressured by their management to keep their true sexual identity a secret. The fear was that girls wouldn't find them attractive any more - and therefore wouldn't buy tickets or records. Troye has obviously blown that idea out of the water.

In an interview with Beat magazine, Troye is asked why people are still surprised that teenage girls are into 'cute gay male pop-star'? He's response reveals quite a lot about his perspective as a queer pop star with a large female fan base. It's cute AF too.

"I don't know!" Troye says. "I do think it's fairly promising. It reflects really well on the kids at the show, it shows that they're cool and open-minded and they're not just there to try and get in my pants; obviously they can't."

He continues, "I sort of came out without telling anyone I was going to do it because I knew everyone was going to be like, “what if you lose your fans?” and all that stuff.  I weighed up that possibility and it paled into insignificance compared to how important it was for me to be happy and open. I'd made that decision and I didn't want anyone else weighing in on it because it was a personal decision I needed to make. Now I'm so stoked with the way it worked out because everyone still seems to be into it so it's all good."

Damn, Troye sounds like a proud father!

You should probably read the rest of the interview too, as Troye has his tarot cards read, which reveals that Troye is 'here for the devil'. His response? "If I’m the devil then so be it, if that’s my purpose to be this gay devil then cool fine fair enough that’s me."

Same.
