Someone Labelled Years & Years' Music As "Gay" And EVERYONE Just Clapped Back

Like, is "Gay" a new music genre now?
You're all following Olly Alexander from Years & Years on Twitter, right? Great, then you'll have probably seen his low key little twitter rant that happened on May 26 then! And if you aren't following him, we've got all the details on what went down.
Once upon a time (like, a couple of days ago), Olly received this tweet with a picture attached.
@yearsandyears @alexander_olly i didn't know your genre was gay pic.twitter.com/vPOnJkTPT8

It turns out that the Years & Years album was being displayed in the "Gay" section of a German music store, alongside Troye Sivan's Blue Neighbourhood.
Naturally, Olly was a bit taken aback by the image.
um ok let's talk about this https://t.co/fb7YxRclN5

At first, Olly actually called out a pretty important point about the labelling of sounds and genres within music.
if u think my music is gay that's cool i love being gay and i love my gay music but can u really label a sound or style of music "gay"

Many fans responded to his discussion, most of whom pointed out that endorsing a gay vs. straight binary was completely unnecessary and that a 'gay' music genre was not even a thing that should exist. One fan replied: "This really makes me upset. It's about the music, I don't care who's in the band and what sexuality they have."
After a bit of back and forth, Olly then started poking fun at the whole debacle and embraced it either way.
me and my gay ass love gay music and being gay is the best ! Bye h8rs!
— Olly Alexander (@alexander_olly) May 26, 2016
But not before Troye Sivan, Adam Lambert and Matty Healy got involved to show their support for for Olly and "gay ass".
@alexander_olly I love saying I love being gay
— Troye Sivan (@troyesivan) May 26, 2016
.@alexander_olly but is your song gonna be a top or a bottom?
— ADAM LAMBERT (@adamlambert) May 26, 2016
@alexander_olly I'm gay for your music

#SquadGoals!
But there may a twist in our tale, friends. We at PopBuzz do enjoy brushing up on our sleuthing skills every now and then and we reckon it totally looks like some excited fan has deliberately moved the albums into the DVD section just for the LOLs. See...
.@bareIyhuman @yearsandyears @alexander_olly That's the "gay movie" DVD section, those cd's were just placed there for the photo? Hmmm

Either way, it kicked off a pretty great debate on social media about LGBT representation in music so, thanks Olly!
