I'M NOT CRYING. YOU'RE CRYING.

Well, it's been a full year since Zayn Malik went total spiltsville on us. His departure from the world's most popular boyband was emotional but not entirely shocking. Since last March, Zayn has gone on to give some pretty revealing interviews while One D's remaining members have been curiously mum about the whole thing.

One year on, Zayn has had some time to reflect on his tattered relationship with the boys and, to be honest, the whole things is just super sad.

Speaking to NME for their cover story, Zayn talks leaving the band and keeping in touch with the boys as well as the day he knew he needed to quit the band.

I called my security and I was like, 'I need to sort out a plane. I want to go home.' I don't know how I knew, but I just did. So I chatted with my cousin. Listened to a few songs. Just waited for my plane to come.

At this point Zayn had been with One Direction going on five years and this decision would have defied fan expectations as well as obligations to the rest of his band mates. It was no doubt a tough decision and one that probably still sucks in retrospect. As for Zayn's relationship with the boys?

I tried to have contact but nobody's reached out. So... whatever.

*Howls mournfully into the night sky*

The only bright spot? Zayn has somehow managed to salvage his relationship with at least one member of One Direction.

I'm still probably the closest to Liam. He congratulated me on my single, which was nice. I congratulated him on his Brit Award. It was a good chat. We haven't met up in a long time so we want to meet up.

So what does it all mean? Well, clearly it's been a long road to Mind Of Mine. In the process of leaving the safety net that was One Direction, Zayn has lost his four best friends, his longtime girlfriend, and a lot of fans who still haven't forgiven him for this perceived betrayal.

Whether or not you're a Zayn fan, you have to admit that it's taken a lot of a bravery to leave his friends and pursue his own happiness.

The bright side of this whole situation?
