The Sims 4 will be free to download permanently from October, with EA announcing they will also be giving something extra to people who have already bought it.

The base game of The Sims 4 will be free-to-play across all platforms starting from October 18th, which means that anyone can access the game without paying anything at all. All you have to do is visit The Sims 4 page on the EA website and you can download it directly from there. Expansion packs will remain as paid-for content.

If you’ve already bought the game, don’t worry - anyone with a previous purchase will be able to claim a Desert Luxe Kit expansion for free, which will add new indoor and outdoor furniture “inspired by the natural landscape of the Southwestern desert”, according to EA.

But anyone who already has the game will have to be fast - this offer only lasts until October 17th, the day before the game goes free-to-play. To redeem it, all you need to do is log-in to the game.

Anyone who’s an EA member will get extras as well. If you’re subscribed to EA Play, you can get the Get To Work Expansion Pack, which adds new jobs for your Sims, on October 18th as well. EA Play Pro subscribers will also receive the Toddler Stuff Pack, which adds a lot of fun items for toddlers to the game.

Sims 5 will likely be released at some point, but it’s unlikely to be any time soon as EA is set on expanding the current game for some while yet. A blog post on the official website reads: “We will continue to develop and release packs, kits and Sims Delivery Express drops into the foreseeable future”.

The company is set to reveal more about the upcoming additions during a Behind The Sims Summit livestream on 18 October, the day the game becomes free. It will air across The Sims’ YouTube and Twitch channels at 10 PDT, which is 6pm BST for the UK.
