What era is Bridgerton set and in what time period?

Bridgerton is set between 1811 – 1820, also dubbed the Regency era when Great Britain and Ireland was coming to the end of the Georgian era.

Queen Charlotte, played by Golda Rosheuval, plays a big part in Bridgerton, deciding which young woman will be dubbed the woman of the moment in the marriage market.

Golda’s character Queen Charlotte is of course depicting George III’s wife, but in Bridgerton she portrays a gossip-loving royal at the “top of the food chain,” as the actress put it. “Everything she says must go.”

Meanwhile, Phoebe Dynevor describes the show as “regency with a twist”.

“Everything is rooted in Regency times, but the volume is turned up,” Bridgerton’s creator, director and showrunner, Chris Van Dusen says. “One example of that is that Bridgerton is a bonnet-free world. Our ladies wear hats, but they don’t wear more traditional bonnets.”

What is the regency era?

The regency period is a political period between 1811 – 1820, when the world of fashion, architecture, romantic art, literature and style was developing.

Historically, the definition of the Regency was the time period when George, Prince of Wales, governed the country as 'Regent' while his father George III was mentally unwell. The decision was not taken lightly and Parliament debated for two and a half months over whether to permit Prince George to take over.

With Bridgerton, they’re not trying to recreate the specific time, instead they’re creating a new world for the characters.
