BRB, just off to get inked.

If you're anything like us, your Instagram 'likes' file is probably full of random tattoos that you've seen in your timelines. You save them absentmindedly just incase one day you finally pluck up the courage to sneak out to the parlour and get inked before you parents catch you. But you can never make up your mind what you *really* want to get, can you? Enter, the biggest tattoo trends of 2017 for inspiration.

Clean lines, simple designs and keeping everything within that chic minimalist aesthetic - that's what Instagram is saying when it comes to the tattoo in 2017. The basic the better, tbh. And they're all small and subtle enough that your parents won't even notice.

1) Single Line Tattoos

Nothing says "I like to keep things simple" like a chic AF single line tattoo morphed into an intricate illustration. Inspired by the work of tattoo artist Mo Ganji, they're not a new trend but judging by the sudden increase in popularity, they're gonna be big in 2017. They make for a pretty nice metaphor too.

2) Finger Tattoos

A basic finger tattoo is a great place to get inked for the first time. You can keep it delicate and subtle by going for something minimal on th einside of your finger, or you can go hard like Cara Delevingne and her signature knuckle Lion.

3) Botanical Tattoos

Botanical tats were on the rise in 2016 but they're set to be even bigger in 2017. If you're looking for something with a little more colour, then this is the trend for you. You can go big or small, intricate or simple - either way, it's going to look gorgey.

4) Watercolour Tattoos

Much like the botanical trend, if you're looking to add a little colour into your tattoo, dodge the block colouring and shading and go for the ethereal watercolour technique. Pair it with your florals, or your geometric designs and watch those Instagram likes roll in.

5) Red Ink Tattoos

Bored of boring old black ink? Same, fam. Thanks to tattoo artist BangBang's scribbles on Kylie Jenner, red ink has become a pretty big request in the world of tattoos. Be careful though, red ink is notorious for for allergies and fades pretty easily...

6) Hand drawn Tattoos

We don't know about you but getting a tattoo with a heartfelt meaning behind it is our idea of a good plan when it comes to inking yourself ~forever~. Take inspiration from the hand drawn tattoo trend and go for a doodle or handwriting of a loved one. It looks cute and there's the added guarantee that your tattoo will be a complete one off. Unique AF.

7) Basic Number Tattoos

Remember when everyone was obsessed with Roman numeral tattoos? They've just had the most basic glo-up and it's about to take off. Instead of being cryptic about it, people are literally just tatting number and letters in standard Arial font. You want someone special's birthdate or initials tatted on you? Perfect, then this one is for you. Take inspiration from Bella Thorne, or you know, Eleven from Stranger Things...

8) Script Tattoos

Good news for those of you who've had your eye on inking some meaningful lyrics onto your bod in the fanciest cursive font known to man. Script tattoos are back in a big way, thanks to a cheeky signal boost from Lady Gaga. The trend covers everything from single words on your inner arm or rib cage to full quotes and lyrics from your elbow to your wrist or literally down the side of your body. Obsessed.

9) Hip Tattoos

If you're into following the lead of celebs on Instagram, then let Kylie Jenner inspire you for once in your life, ok? Hip tattoos are back, everyone... this is not a drill. This trend is PERFECT to hide from your parents and it's a spot where you don't have to worry about it being too visible for your professional life too. And it's chic dot com.

10) Geometric Tattoos

Geometric tattoos are among the most popular of all tattoo Instagram trends. If you're into something more visual than just words, go full geometric. They're timeless, they're gorgeous and they'll score a sh*t ton of Instagram likes. Something small like an arrow or circles are way more easier to commit to than a full blown portrait or a lyric you might not like in 5 years time. Keep it basic.

11) Inner Arm Tattoos

2016 was a big year for the forearm tattoo, but 2017 is taking it up even further. Literally. It's another really great spot if you want to keep the visibility to a minimum and there's room for you to go big or small. It's also a popular tattoo location amongst celebrities such as Katy Perry and Miley Cyrus too.

12) Feminist Tattoos

No time like the present, ey? There's been a MASSIVE increase in the use of the #feministtattoo hashtag on Instagram over the past few months. You'll find everything from 'GRL PWR' written in love hearts to some powerful quotes ("Nevertheless, she persisted" is a fast growing favourite), so if you're looking for a place to permanently cement your involement in the movement, now is the time.

13) Photo Realistic Tattoos

A post shared by Bang Bang (@bangbangnyc) onDec 27, 2016 at 11:59am PST

Hyper-realistic tattoos are fast becoming a big trend and we're not just talking about those HUGE portraits of Marilyn Monroe. Anything from pets, people, places, objects, flowers... people are flocking to tattoo artists like BangBang and JonBoi for tiny, intricate designs that look like they've been immaculately printed on your skin.
