The World’s First Colour-Changing Hair Dye Is Here And It’s Actually Magic

It's like a mood ring but for your hair...
All we really want in life is that ability to change our hair colour as many times as we like without the hassle and the endless trips to the supermarket or hair salon... is that too much to ask? We thought we hit the jackpot when we found that Split Dye technique but honestly, when you live somewhere as windy as London, it sort of ends up as more of a two tone mess than a gorgey Melanie Martinez homage. FFS.
Hair dye-loving mermaids of the world, all your wildest dreams are about to come true because someone has just invented hair dye that changes colour based on the freakin' temperature and you're going to scream when you see what it looks like.
Like witchcraft, right? Well that's a coincidence because an actual witch created it. No, seriously. Lauren Bowker, an alchemist and occultist has created hair dye that acts like a mood ring. Her project THEUNSEEN sees her invent some pretty incredible creations; she's made a headpiece with gems that change colour based on your brain activity and a jacket that responds to the levels of air pollution in the air.
But her latest creation called FIRE, due to launch at London Fashion Week is the one we reaaaaally want to get our hands on. Here's how it works:
“When heat hits the pigment, or if the cool hits the pigment, it changes the bonds of the chemistry to give you a different colour, so it’s like a chemical reaction. However, we also work with ones that change their structure, which gives you a light refraction instead, so it’s more like a prism colour change. On the outsider’s version of what the technology does, it changes its colour to temperatures. So we tuned those so that if you're inside you get one colour and if you're outside you get another colour. If you have red hair and you’re in the wind it might go blue. So what we did was look at data patterns of weathers and the environment in different countries and tailor the colour changes to correlate with those.”
One minute, your hair could be red and then minute you step outside into the harsh winter breeze - you're blue.
The application of the dye is currently semi-permanent lasting over a few washes but the brand are currently looking for some more funding to take this hair dye to the next level.
That's that then. Dye your hair with this and your aesthetic will be set for all four seasons. Where do we sign?
