How Will Hannah Baker's season 2 arc play out?

Audiences watched one of this year's breakout Netflix hits with one huge expectation: Hannah Baker would definitely die at the end of 13 Reasons Why. They listened to each heartbreaking tape with the knowledge that their narrator would definitely not make it out alive.

When the season ended, fans had to come to terms with the fact that Hannah Baker would likely appear in a very small way for season two, but now a recent profile of Katherine Langford has raised the possibility that Hannah Baker could be back in a big way.

The Hollywood Reporter did a profile of the young actress for its "Rising Stars" list. In it, THR gave a brief but meaningful description of the young star's whereabouts.

"[Langford] is currently in Northern California filming the second season of the breakout YA drama, which will feature her character in more scenes than even Langford expected."

So, what does this mean for Hannah Baker?

Well, unless 13 Reasons Why is turning into a supernatural drama where the dead can come back to life, it's probably a safe bet to assume that Hannah Baker will be queen of the flashback scene, once more.

Brian Yorkey confirmed earlier this year that Hannah would appear in season 2 in a different way. "We’re going to see Hannah in flashbacks [...] We’re going to see parts of Hannah’s life that we didn’t in Season 1. We haven’t really gone into that much detail but I know that we’re going to continue that dialogue and keep developing the story."

The 13 kids "responsible" for her death will also appear in legal depositions, so Hannah will likely live on in their recollections.

One huge change we can expect is the fact that Hannah cannot be a narrator this season.

Viewers have only heard her voice on the tapes and in the memories outlined on those tapes. Now that Hannah is gone, a new narrator will have to take the reins.

News that Hannah will appear in much of season 2 is an interesting development from a storytelling standpoint.
For much of season one, it was implied that Hannah was, at times, an unreliable narrator. This is not to say that she lied or made up her story. However, inconsistencies in her memory and explanations were pointed out more than once in the first season.

Hannah's heavy involvement in season 2 could be a way for writers to show how Hannah's story might differ in the minds of her family and classmates.

Netflix have not announced a season 2 air date, however, fans should eye a Spring 2018 release.
