"We still have a lot to learn"
Netflix Spain has posted what appears to be the first promotional trailer for 13 Reasons Why season two.
It was the one year anniversary of the first season of the controversial Netflix show two weeks ago (31 March) and fans have been desperate to find any information they can about the release date for season two.
Until now, only a video about trigger warnings involving the cast have been released, as well as a preview screening for a select number of fans in LA followed by a Q&A with the cast and crew. Those who attended were under a strict embargo not to release any information about what they've seen and, despite a few rumours online, nothing substantive has been leaked.
Now, Netflix in Spain has released a new video promoting the new season, however, it doesn't feature any of the cast. Instead, according to translations sourced on Reddit, the video features a classroom of high school students discussing their experiences with bullying and name calling. They are then asked to discuss compliments they have received. It ends with the students discussing how they should focus on more positive interactions between each other, with the tagline "We still have a lot to learn".
Watch the video below:
The tagline works in two ways. Firstly, that we have 'more to learn' about how to treat each other with respect and secondly, that we have more to learn about Hannah Baker's story.
It's an interesting strategy by Netflix, one which they must hope will position 13 Reasons Why as a force for good, a vehicle to shine a light on the damaging consequences of bullying. The show's first season received a torrent of criticism for what many believed to be unnecessarily graphic and gory depictions of self harm and rape. Whether or not these promotional videos, and the cast trigger warning before episodes, will be enough to turn the tide of opinion in their favour is still up for debate.
