We're SO glad this version never became a TV show.

If there's one gift 2017 has given us, it's the dark reboot of a comic book favourite that we never knew we needed.

Archie and the gang were traditionally wholesome characters that our parents and grandparents loved, but Riverdale can get, well, a BIT murdery.

Leave it to Reddit to unearth an Archie Comics treasure from the 90s that is certainly a far cry from the Riverdale we all know and love.

Riverdale fans are discovering the magic that is Archie: To Riverdale and Back Again, a made for TV movie circa 1990.

Now, that is a 90s situation if I've ever seen one.

The film takes place 15 years after the gang leaves Riverdale. Jughead is a dad (and he, admittedly, looks more like the comic book Jughead than Cole Sprouse does), Betty is a teacher, and Veronica seems very dedicated in her pursuit of Archie.

This major throwback was initially conceived as something that might lead to a whole television series. Mercifully, a wider project was shelved after the film's poor ratings. Can you imagine that movie turning into a whole TV show? I'm shook.

Archie Comics are such a cultural touchstone that there have probably been tons of conversations with TV executives about how best to do a television series.

Looks like the CW's interpretation came at just the right time. Not only was the timing solid, the decision to make Riverdale a little less wholesome is probably what makes it so addictive for 2017 audiences.

Now, for the million dollar question.

Whose version of "Sugar Sugar" is the winner? Jughead's circa 1990 or the Pussycats circa 2017?
