Jane the Virgin creator reveals why Jane chose Rafael over Michael in season 5

It's official. Jane the Virgin has chosen Rafael over Michael and now the creator has explained why.

Ever since Jane the Virgin season 5 began, fans have been divided over whether Jane should end up with Michael or Rafael. Over the course of the last few seasons, Jane and Rafael have fallen madly in love with each other. That being said, Michael literally was Jane's husband and him coming back from the dead complicated things. The past few episodes have been an emotional rollercoaster but, ultimately, Jane decided that Rafael was her true love.

After going to Montana with Michael, Jane realises that she's still in love with Rafael and that she and Michael have changed so much that they're no longer right for each other. Speaking to TV Guide about Jane's decision, Jane the Virgin creator and showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman explained: "I think there are different love interests and different people that are right for you at different times of your life."

She added: "Jane really realises that these five years and the changes that have happened have changed her, and Rafael is who she wants to be with." However, there's a twist. After Jane tells Rafael how she really feels, he says he is unable to trust her anymore. Urman said: "Whether Rafael feels the same way is going to be up in the air, but that's where her heart is."

Addressing everyone who was on Team Michael, Urman continued: "I don't think it takes away from what they had and how she did choose Michael and how he was right for her then. Obviously in the course of these five years he died, she grieved him, he lost his memory, then came back. I believe that Michael and Jane were soulmates at that moment in her life."

Urman then revealed: "And now I believe that Rafael is who Jane wants at this moment in her life. I don't think he was right for her in Season 1. I think he's really changed, and that's what we've been trying to do as writers for the past five years, is incrementally move him to a different place where Jane's values and Rafael's values about what's important."
