The creators are being called out for 'baiting' the audience

Modern Family made a bold move last night by killing off a ‘major character’, but it wasn’t what the fans expected.

(SPOILERS AHEAD)

The show runners may have been a bit too liberal with the term ‘major character’, considering the character in question has only been in 7 episodes - that’s out of a total 232. That's just over 3% of all the episodes. And you best believe I've done the maths.

7 episodes ≠ major character. Sis, it just don't add up.

In case you haven’t figured it out already, the unlucky lady was none other than DeDe (portrayed by Shelley Long), the ex-wife of Jay (Ed O’Neill) / mother of Claire (Julie Bowen) and Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson).

DeDe’s passed away in her sleep offscreen, while on a trip with her woman’s group. The realism of the episode was heartbreaking, and yes, I’m still recovering.

While there’s no denying that the show handled the delicate topic with sensitivity, fans are still pouring in with mixed responses.

Some are straight up devastated.

Some are just pleased the victim wasn’t one of their faves.

Others, however, are PRESSED.

Not good.

It seems as though fans were expecting a more influential character to have passed, considering all the hype built around the episode. Fans obviously aren’t disappointed that one of the top characters have exited the show, but they do feel baited by the creators.

Regardless, the episode is still banging, and DeDe will be sorely missed by all.
