The creators are being called out for 'baiting' the audience
Modern Family made a bold move last night by killing off a ‘major character’, but it wasn’t what the fans expected.
The show runners may have been a bit too liberal with the term ‘major character’, considering the character in question has only been in 7 episodes - that’s out of a total 232. That's just over 3% of all the episodes. And you best believe I've done the maths.
7 episodes ≠ major character. Sis, it just don't add up.
In case you haven’t figured it out already, the unlucky lady was none other than DeDe (portrayed by Shelley Long), the ex-wife of Jay (Ed O’Neill) / mother of Claire (Julie Bowen) and Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson).
DeDe’s passed away in her sleep offscreen, while on a trip with her woman’s group. The realism of the episode was heartbreaking, and yes, I’m still recovering.
While there’s no denying that the show handled the delicate topic with sensitivity, fans are still pouring in with mixed responses.
Some are straight up devastated.
so i just watched the latest episode of modern family and im crying sooo bad— scarin‘ erin (@yourslarajean) October 25, 2018
Some are just pleased the victim wasn’t one of their faves.
I was thinking it would be either be Jay or Dee Dee. I'm glad it was Dee Dee because Jay is such a great character. I really liked the part with Lily messing with Gloria. #ModernFamily— Lindy255 (@Lindy255) October 25, 2018
Others, however, are PRESSED.
Calling the modern family death a “major character” was false advertising.— Jilaria (@jilaria2) October 25, 2018
Jay or bust
#ModernFamily has never disappointed...until tonight. The death reveal was underwhelming. It also took away from the usual shenanigans that would make the Halloween episode entertaining.— Anne (@0107_anne) October 25, 2018
The “major character” Modern Family killed off has been in 7 of 232 episodes 💀— A Nightmare on grindr (@Geeky_Spice) October 25, 2018
It seems as though fans were expecting a more influential character to have passed, considering all the hype built around the episode. Fans obviously aren’t disappointed that one of the top characters have exited the show, but they do feel baited by the creators.
Regardless, the episode is still banging, and DeDe will be sorely missed by all.
