The ill-conceived "luxury" festival became one of 2017's biggest spectacles. After arriving on the island, it didn't take long for guests to begin documenting what happened at Fyre Festival.

Netflix has acquired a documentary based on the viral Fyre Festival debacle of 2017. The film will arrive on the streaming platform in January 2019 and will offer "an exclusive behind the scenes look at the infamous unraveling of the Fyre music festival." The festival, which was billed as a luxury music experience in the Bahamas, became one of the biggest news stories of 2017 and the documentary will offer a deep dive into what happened at Fyre Festival.

What happened at Fyre Festival?

Fyre Festival was scheduled to take place over two weekends in late April/early May 2017 on the Bahamian Island of Great Exuma. Arists like Blink 182, Migos and Disclosure were reportedly slated to perform at the "immersive music festival" event.

Celebrity promo from the likes of Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid furthered the appearance of a "luxury" event. Guests reportedly paid between $1,500 to $12,000 for varying experiences.

When guests arrived for the event, however, accusations of poor accommodation and inadequate food hit the internet almost immediately.

People in attendance began documenting the event and Fyre Fest soon went viral.

The viral Fyre Festival sandwich can even be seen in the trailer.

The legal fall out of the event was substantial and one of its organisers, Billy MacFarland, pleaded guilty to two counts of wire fraud in March 2018, almost a year after the initial event. MacFarland was given a six year prison sentence in October 2018.

When is the Fyre Festival documentary out on Netflix?

Fyre is out on Netflix January 18, 2019. It comes from Chris Smith, the director of the Emmy Award Nominated documentary Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond". The documentary will give a "first-hand look into disastrous crash of Fyre as told by the organizers themselves."
