"Paid rumours and paid campaigns on social media don’t dictate [casting decisions] because they have no basis in reality."

Amber Heard has confirmed that she will reprise her role as Mera in the highly-anticipated Aquaman sequel.

There had been speculation that the actress may not appear in Aquaman 2 after a petition to have her dropped from the movie reached more than 1 million signatures. The petition was launched by fans of her ex-husband Johnny Depp, who Amber has accused of domestic abuse, which he has denied.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Amber confirmed she would return for Aquaman 2 despite the backlash. She said: "I'm super excited about the amount of fan love and the amount of fan appreciation that Aquaman has acquired and that it has garnered so much excitement for Aquaman and Mera that it means we'll be coming back. I'm so excited to film that."

Aquaman 2 hasn't actually been greenlit just yet but Amber also told the publication that production will hopefully begin in 2021.

Amber confirming her role comes just days after Johnny was forced to step down from playing Gellert Grindelwald in the Fantastic Beasts franchise. He lost his libel case against The Sun newspaper over an article in which they referred to him as a "wife-beater". A judge ruled that the claims against him were "substantially true".

Over 100,000 people have now signed a Change.org petition asking for Johnny to return to Fantastic Beasts 3.

Amber has obviously seen all the chaos surrounding the case online, and she continued: "Paid rumours and paid campaigns on social media don’t dictate [casting decisions] because they have no basis in reality. Only the fans actually made Aquaman and Aquaman 2 happen. I’m excited to get started next year."
