All the latest news and information about American Horror Story season 9 including the cast, theme, theories, spoilers and trailers.
American Horror Story was renewed for seasons eight and nine way back in January 2017 with the confirmation that the show would be back for season 10 earlier this year. There's no doubting that Apocalypse has been one of the most show-stopping and jaw-dropping seasons of the show so far but after the *actual* end of days, where can the series possibly go next?
It was revealed by Ryan Murphy in April 2019 that this season's title will be AHS: 1984 and will follow an '80's cabin slasher horror vibe. The season will premiere on Wednesday 18th September at 10pm on FX.
It's also been confirmed that Evan Peters will NOT be part of season 9. This will be the first season without him. Sarah Paulson does appear to be returning this season - but not in a major role. It is unclear how many episodes she will be in.
Here's the latest news about American Horror Story season 9...
- Pose actress Angelica Ross has been cast as a series regular for the season. She is the first trans actor to secure two series regular roles on TV.
- Billy Eichner will not be returning for season 9, explaining in a tweet that he "can’t do AHS this year." Cheyenne Jackson has also ruled out a return.
- Evan Peters will not be returning for season 9 either. In an interview at Wondercon, Evan confirmed that he would be "sitting a season out." Evan previously said he was going to "take a break" from acting. It's likely that he'll return for season 10.
- Confirmed by Ryan Murphy on Instagram, we'll be seeing a brand new face join the cast in season 9. Olympian Gus Kenworthy has been cast as Emma Roberts' boyfriend. No other details about his character have been released.
Here's everything we know about American Horror Story season 9 so far:
What is the theme for American Horror Story season 9?
The title for season 9 will be 'AHS: 1984' and judging by the teaser trailer, the season's theme appears to be that of an 80's slasher movie. The trailer features a woman running through the woods followed by a terrifying masked figure carrying a huge knife.
Some fans have been speculating the season could take place at a summer camp, others are wondering if the show will do an AHS slasher take on George Orwell's dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four.
AHS: 1984 premiere date: When will American Horror Story season 9 be released?
It's now been confirmed that AHS: 1984 will premiere on Wednesday September 18th at 10pm on FX. The season will likely follow a similar weekly air date schedule to that of Cult and Apocalypse.
AHS 1984 cast: Which cast members will return for American Horror Story Season 9?
Emma Roberts and Gus Kenworthy are the first two confirmed cast members for season 9. Angelica Ross, who played Candy on Pose, has also been cast as a series regular for the season. No details about their characters have been released yet.
For the first time in the show's history, Evan Peters will not be part of the new season. He confirmed in March 2019 that he would be "sitting a season out." The news follows his recent "break" that he revealed in an interview with GQ. He later expressed that a return in season 10 is still on the table.
Billy Eichner will not be part of the new season either, explaining to a fan that he's unable to take part on Twitter.
Thank you! I can’t do AHS this year but boy oh boy I had a blast and I love all those crazy kids a lot. ❤️ https://t.co/ntnNdombY1— billy eichner (@billyeichner) May 24, 2019
It sounds like Sarah Paulson will be taking a step back from the show this season too. It's been reported that while she will appear, her role will be significantly smaller compared to the main characters she's played over the past three seasons.
Fans are also speculating whether or not Cody Fern will back for a second season. Speaking to OUT, he said he'd return "in a heartbeat," if he was asked by Murphy. Murphy also appears to have confirmed via Instagram that he'll be working with Cody on another upcoming project, but did not specify whether it was AHS-related or not. (Probably not, but one can dream.)
What’s going to happen in American Horror Story Season 9?
Who knows! Before it was announced that season eight would now be the crossover season, fans speculated that the next season could focus on some kind of nuclear threat that tied into Freak Show - but that turned out to be a preeeeetty big plot point in Apocalypse.
It's likely (considering what was shown in the teaser trailer) that the main focus on the season will revolve around a masked serial killer... who runs around the woods chasing people. But then again, teaser trailers for AHS have often been misleading in the past.
According to executive producer Tim Minnear, the season will "be really scary but a lot of fun, like it always is. And that if you have a taste for ’80s horror, you’re in for a treat.” (Via The Wrap)
If we take the '1984' George Orwell connection into mind, could the season also focus on some kind of government surveillance?
Have they started filming American Horror Story season 9 yet?
Production has officially begun on the ninth season. Filming will take place in the summer/fall of 2019, as the show maintains a much smaller window between the filming and the airing of the season to avoid leaks or spoilers. Gus Kenworthy shared an image of what appeared to be a writers draft of the AHS script on Instagram in June 2019, suggesting filming should be starting soon. Emma Roberts has also dyed her hair brown for the role.
Is there an American Horror Story season 9 trailer?
Well, there's a teaser trailer but so far... nothing that features any new characters. When there is, we'll let you know.
