If you haven't seen Infinity War yet, LOOK AWAY NOW!

It is a known fact that the post-credits scenes after every Marvel movie are a staple of the MCU. Ever since Iron Man, we've been blessed with extra footage, mind-blowing easter eggs and even crossovers. Sometimes they’re just funny little jokes, but a lot of the time they’re setting up important details for the coming films and teasing new characters.

The end of Avengers: Infinity War was no exception and it hinted at one HUGE plot point for the next instalment of the Avengers and MCU franchises.

So Avengers: Infinity War ends horribly, doesn’t it? Thanos gets all six infinity stones, he snaps his fingers, half the universe (including all but the original Avengers) dies instantly. It seems to be absolutely hopeless. And instead of giving us some light relief, a nice soft joke or easter egg, the post-credits scene is only slightly more hopeful.

In the post-credits scene we see Nick Fury and Maria Hill driving before getting in a car crash as people around them evaporate. Slowly realising what's happening, they decide to send out a distress call. As Maria starts to disappear, Nick wastes no time activating an old pager. He sends a message just as he, too, evaporates. After a tense few seconds of waiting to see if he managed to send it on time, we see a starburst icon surrounded by red and blue lines.

To some, this might not mean too much. But dedicated Marvel fans will recognise it as the symbol of Captain Marvel. Yes, Fury was paging Captain Marvel asking for her help on earth with Thanos. Captain Marvel, of course, hasn’t appeared in the MCU yet, but she does have her own film coming out in March 2019, in which she’ll be played by Brie Larson.

Captain Marvel’s solo film, Captain Marvel, will be set in the 1990s and will look at how Air Force pilot Carol Danvers gained her superpowers after an accident merges her DNA with an alien’s. She then starts working with Fury in the military, so the pair are old friends – it makes perfect sense that Fury would call on her. Kevin Feige has called Captain Marvel the MCU’s “most powerful hero by far”, so she definitely has some tools in her arsenal that the other heroes don’t that could finally take down Thanos.

Whatever the outcome, Captain Marvel is an exciting development – and hopefully one that could bring back all of our beloved heroes.

Call me Captain Marvel.
