Is Mysterio dead or was it all an illusion? Let's investigate...

Spider-Man: Far From Home has only been out for a week and not only has it exceeded all of our expectations, it's also absolutely obliterated box office expectations.

The follow-up to the recording breaking Avengers: Endgame has taken $600 million worldwide so far which means a loooot of people have already seen Tom Holland and Jake Gyllenhaal team up to fight monsters across several European countries dressed in skin tight super-suits and capes. The perfect summer if you ask me.

Far From Home leaves us with a handful of questions going into Marvel's Phase 4 and sets up the third instalment of Holland's outing as Peter Parker in one of the MCU's biggest post-credit scene twists yet.

But the biggest question revolves around the current status of Mysterio (played by Gyllenhaal) - and whether or not he actually died at the end of the film.

How did Mysterio die in Far From Home?

Mysterio's big twist is that he's actually a bad guy. He's a former employee of Stark Industries who manipulates Peter into giving him Tony's EDITH glasses so he can use Stark drones to enhance his own illusion technology, creating an Avengers level threat so he could defeat it on his own and become the greatest superhero that ever lived.

At the end of Far From Home, Spider-Man and Mysterio end up in a final battle at the top of Tower Bridge in London, surrounded by killer drones that are all still responding to Mysterio's orders. At the end of the film, Peter is able to call off the drones and we see Mysterio "die" after he's shot by a misfiring machine.

But given what happens in THAT post-credit scene, and if we take into account what we know about Mysterio's big plan, there's a possibility that his death is not actually what it seems...

So, is Mysterio dead, or is he still alive?

This is a complicated question because Mysterio is such a complicated figure. To make matters even more confusing, producer Amy Pascal has even said that "you don't know" if he's dead or alive either. Great.

By the looks of things, Jake Gyllenhaal's Quentin Beck is gone. He was killed. He's dead... or so we think. (It's honestly hard to trust and believe anything when the man you're dealing with was such an expert in creating convincing illusions.)

As Beck said himself, he had contingency plans and was able to outsmart Skrull Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D. with his plans so it's entirely possible that he could have faked his death.

Theories have been floating around the internet suggesting that the Mysterio that "died" in front of Peter Parker was some kind of robot that was not controlled using Beck's tech. When Peter asks EDITH whether Beck’s death is real, she doesn’t give an affirmative. She just says something about it not being part of the drones illusions.

Mysterio as an idea and an image is, of course, not dead. Members of his huge organisation are still at large with a drive that contains all sorts of illusion tech. We see that they are still continuing that narrative when they're able to doctor the footage of Mysterio framing Spider-Man for his death that was then sent to the Daily Bugle.

While Gyllenhaal may not return as the physical Beck, there's no doubt that he'll pop up as an illusion again at some point. Mysterio is not done with the MCU yet.
