Jane the Virgin fans are in tears over the twist in the ending of this week's episode...

Jane the Virgin is no stranger to plot twists and this week's episode, the brand new cliffhanger involving Michael was one of its biggest plot twists yet.

Ever since Jane the Virgin returned with season 5 last month, viewers have been desperate to find out exactly how Michael's surprise return would affect Jane. Would she stay with Rafael or would she return to her first true love? Obviously, the whole set-up of Michael having amnesia and changing his name to Jason affected things but now we have been thrown another twist and Jane the Virgin showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman has opened up about it.

Does Michael get his memory back in Jane the Virgin season 5?

Yes. At the end of this week's episode, Jane and Jason (Michael) tearfully decide to go back to their separate lives and leave their past in the past. After going on a date, they realised that they didn't share the spark they had when Jason was Michael. In the saddest line in TV history Jane says: "you're a good person" and Jason responds: "i must have been... for someone like you to love me."

However, as opposed to leaving it there, Jane closes the door, a bit of dust falls on Jason and, in that moment, he gets back all of his memories as Michael. He then visibly tears up and his heart literally glows. It's heartbreaking and uplifting and soul destroying and beautiful and I need to sue the CW for emotional damages. Michael is back and everything is up in the air again. Kill me now.

Discussing the twist with EW, Jennie said: “We knew that his memories were going to come back and that that was going to change everything once again. Before that, the challenge was: How do we make it seem as though, if his memories didn’t come back, this was a story worth telling on its own? What would it be like for Jane to actually get a moment to say goodbye?"

She then added: "And what could Michael get out of the journey if his memories didn’t come back, which is knowing that he’s a good person and that he deserves happiness? Knowing that they would have this closure, we thought that was a journey worth going on. Because he’s better off for having gone through it, and so is Jane.” OUR HEARTS.

Explaining what's next for Jane, Michael and Rafael, Jennie finished saying: "And then of course we love the moment where everything changes for our characters and suddenly they’re going to be in a huge muddy mess again and have to find their way out of it.” Yeah. It's going to be heartbreaking.

Naturally, fans are in pieces over the cliffhangers.

In conclusion, Jane the Virgin has ruined our lives but you best believe that we'll be watching every minute of the rest of it.

What do you think? Are you team Michael or team Rafael?
