Disney's new streaming service, Disney+, will feature a TV series based on the 2018 movie starring Nick Robinson.
Disney is adapting Love, Simon into a TV series with their brand new streaming service Disney+.
It is no secret that Love, Simon was one of the standout rom-coms of 2018. Based on the best-selling Becky Albertalli novel, Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda, Love, Simon tells the coming of age story of Simon Spier, a closeted, gay high school student, who falls in love with an anonymous classmate via email. The film received huge praise for centring LGBTQ+ love and now it's being turned into a TV series by Disney +.
Everything you need to know about Disney+'s Love, Simon series
Last night (Apr 11), Disney officially announced that it will launch its new TV streaming service Disney+ in the US on November 12th this year. It will cost just $6.99 a month. As of right now, there's no word on an international release. They have also told THR that they will be transforming Love, Simon into a TV series. However, Greg Berlanti, who directed the film won't be involved due to his contract with Warner Bros.
Love, Simon screenwriters, Elizabeth Berger and Isaac Aptaker, will be back though. Elizabeth and Isaac are no strangers to TV, since they're both showrunners on This Is Us. Seeing as fans fell in love with the movie's cast (Nick Robinson, Katharine Langford, Alexandra Shipp, Keiynan Lonsdale), we have no doubt that people will be hoping for them to return. Find out all the info about the release, cast and plot below.
When will Disney+'s Love, Simon series come out?
As it stands, there is no official release date for Disney+'s Love, Simon. However, seeing as it has only just been announced we imagine that a 2019 release that coincides with the launch of the service seems unlikely. The first season will probably be released at some point in 2020 but as always, we'll keep you posted if any updates become available.
Who will star in the Disney+ Love, Simon cast?
There is currently no news as to whether or not Disney+'s Love, Simon will bring back the cast of the original film. That being said, while we know fans will want to see Nick Robinson (Simon), Katharine Langford (Leah), Alexandra Shipp (Abby), Keiynan Lonsdale (Blue) and Jorge Lendeborg Jr. (Nick) again, they might not return.
All of the actors are highly in demand at the moment and, on top of that, it seems likely that Disney+ will cast younger stars so that they can convincingly play teenagers for multiple seasons. Disney+ may also try to cast a gay actor in the lead role following backlash over the film not giving the opportunity to a gay star.
Will Disney+'s Love, Simon stay true to the book?
Disney+'s Love, Simon series will be based on the original book and its sequel Leah on the Offbeat, which is about Simon's best friend Leah coming out as bisexual. Again Disney+ haven't confirmed anything but it seems likely that the first season will focus on the first book and the second will cover the second book, if the series gets renewed.
Seeing as it's a series, it seems likely that the show will get a chance to explore content that doesn't feature in the books as well. Hopefully, this means that we will get a chance to see iconic side characters like Ethan get the character development and screen time they deserve.
